RE: Where to Camp Glamis

First off....WOW! I'm glad you'll go back.....even with the rattlers, bugs and drunk. I can't believe the jackasses...oh wait, yes I can but I am a bit surprised for a hot off weekend. I bet the dunes were absolutely beautiful and SOFT! Glad you had a great time.

RE: Advice on our trip to the Imperial Sand Dunes Please...

It's not so much the illegals coming across, it's the drug runners that have all the same stuff as us, camping among the rest of the duning community that is sketchy. USBP tells everyone to use caution when near the border. It will get better down there once the fence is complete.

RE: Advice on our trip to the Imperial Sand Dunes Please...

I have never camped at Buttercup so I can't give you my opinion. My husband prefers the north dunes compared to the south ones. He says he just likes the shape, the washes, etc. As for permits....if it's the primary vehicle, yes, it needs a pass. So all the trucks towing in the trailers will need one each. As for the jeep, if it's towed in, you'll be OK too. We've never been harassed about our jeep once I explain it came in on a trailer but I've heard some say it needs some type of a buddy-pass.

RE: Advice on our trip to the Imperial Sand Dunes Please...

Oh! The other most important part!!! Buy your pass BEFORE you get there. The price for 'on-site' purchase has increased from $25 to $40 for the weekly pass and $90 to $120 for the yearly. Let me know if you need info regarding that too.

RE: Advice on our trip to the Imperial Sand Dunes Please...

I agree with ^^^^ Especially being an off weekend......Washes 10/11 is a great family destination. Even Wash 13 would be ideal but it lacks the closeness of the little dunes like 10/11 do. Have you read through this post? http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21916652.cfm We love Gecko but with all the high-travel buggies, it's just a pain in the rear anymore. Good luck with your homework. Please feel free to PM for more info.

I missed that memo about the wash being closed for repairs! :D

RE: Where to Camp Glamis

Some washes have more soft sand than others so if you had a MH, you would want to be more cautious. Since you're heading out this weekend (and not a holiday weekend), I would go to at least Wash 6. Our favorite wash is 11. 10/11 is great because of the little dunes that you can tuck your rig up close but beware of the soft sand (we air down the truck and trailer). The train noise is minimal considering other washes. 13 is a favorite too and should be a ghost town this week/weekend. Send a PM if you'd like more info.

RE: Where to Camp Glamis

What kind of rig do you have? That will dictate on where to camp in the washes. The lower the wash number, the more you'll hear the train horn. On off weekends and weekdays, the train hardly ever blows it horn away from the train crossings.

RE: RV Endorsement

Wooohooo!! I just got home with my new fancy RV Endorsement....aka Restriction 41. I had to renew my Class C license anyway so I asked for my endorsement. I took the 20 question test titled, "FOR RECREATIONAL VEHICLES AND NONCOMMERCIAL CLASS A TRAILERS" Just a note, this "Restriction 41" is only for 5th wheels that exceed 10K GVWR but doesn't exceed 15K. If your travel trailer exceeds 10K, then you must have a Non-Commercial Class A license. Now I'm legal to tow our pig when hubby's not!

RE: Best Quad for the Dunes?

But if he's used to the feel of his Honda 250r...that Banshee will be completely foreign to him. They both sit so different and the feel is complete opposite too.

RE: Best Quad for the Dunes?

Hubby still rides his 88 250r in the dunes. He said he'll eventually go to the 4stroke but when he does, it's the trx450r. In fact, we'll upgrade my 400ex to the 450 when Honda is fuel injected.... So his advice....find another 250r!

RE: earthquakes in California

When the TH is home (except from May through to Sept while it's at the river) it's always full of water and gas (120 gallons water/36 of gas). We're a little more lazy on the propane with both bottles being full....but at the very least, one is full at all times. I have enough food for a week in it (no wonder hubby gives me a hard time for how heavy it is) but I also have two small milk crates that are stored in there when home then take out when we travel. There's always blankets, clothes, shoes, etc in it that match up with the season. I keep forgetting to pack extra dog food in there! It's on my list. As for the summer when the TH is at the river, I have two 55 gallon barrels full of water on the side of the house and still keep about a week's worth of food easily accessible. The gas cans are always full now. All the camping gear is in the garage (tents, sleeping bags, camp stove, lanterns, etc) so hopefully we'd be able to dig it out if need be. I'd like to have a shed out back some day so all of that stuff would be away from the house and easier to get to....but oh well, the darn money tree isn't blooming...in fact, I think I killed it...lol

RE: I need your opinion - - - - -

Joe, During the months we go off-roading (Oct-April) we have been towing everything back and forth, almost every other weekend, sometimes every weekend. We have discussed storing our TH with the quads in it near the Imperial Sand Dunes to avoid the unnecessary wear/tear on the truck and also to improve fuel mileage. We have pros and cons. The wear/tear on the truck vs packing food, clothing, gasoline, etc in the truck only to haul it out the trailer (turn on the fridge, etc). The reason we left the conventional 5er to a TH was to have the convenience of not double towing, hauling gas cans, etc. We don't pay storage right now because our TH sits in the backyard. As for the truck, we'd save a few miles per gallon which would add up with the frequency of our trips. During the summer months when it's 'river' time...we keep a spot at the CG from April to Sept. Both the TH and the boat stay out there all summer. The TH is fully hooked-up with the boat parked beside it. We jump in the truck with all the food, gas, clothing, etc too...but the difference is that we still don't have to connect to the TH, then tow it to where we're going to camp at...it's there, all level, power, sewer...done. The downfall to this though is that if I want to go somewhere else with the 5er, it's a HUGE inconvenience because it's not at home. So when you ask if anyone is doing it...oh yeah they are. It seems I keep hearing of more and more that are planning on storing in Holtville, Dunes Edge or Glamis Dunes Storage.

RE: WW Weekend Warrior BBB Rating

He has a VERY low opinion on Warriors, and he deals with them daily. He works on WW's daily and has a very low opinion on their structural integrity and build quality as far as that goes as well. I understand that 100%. We've owned standard 5'ers built outside of California....and they are put together so much better than our WW. We knew we were buying a lesser quality but for what we needed the money to be spent was worth it to us. We had our first structural service a few months ago. It's probably easier for us since we only live about 20 minutes away from the factory than you. Our LE had a saggy wall. They welded in new supports in the fender well area. Our rig was the last year before they started offering the lifetime warranty but they said they'd extend it to us too. We've dealt with water damage at the rear cap too, again the factory has been beyond awesome. Would we have these type of problems with other 5'er TH? Maybe...maybe not. It's a crap-shoot. Now I'm watching the front of the trailer. I'm watching for flex over the hitch. I don't see any tattle-tail signs....yet. But I'm thinking there's a little too much flex. Michael...I hope it all works out for you. I'm sorry you are having so many problems. afo4

RE: WW recall notice for exterior lighting?

My guess, the lack of lighting on the sides. The new models have clearance lights in the fenders. Our 05 LE only has two side-lights. I think the backside is lit up enough. We won't be able to schedule it to go in until after summer. It's at the river until September!

RE: Toy Hauler Tires

We put the Denman's on our trailer this year. We made it 4 years and who knows how many miles with the General AmeriTrailer tires with no problems. We couldn't afford to upgrade to the 16" wheels this time around so I did research and really liked what I found about the Denman 225/75-15 E load range (2830lbs) at max 80psi. We shall see how these do..... Good luck with your search!

RE: Weekend Warrior Shower Temperature flucuation

Mine is the opposite, after I turn the showhead back on it is extremely hot for a few seconds and then returns to normal. I just point is toward the shower wall until it is bearable. Hey! Ours does it too! The whole family knows not to stand in the stream when you switch the water back on!
